My name is Valeria and I arrived in Haiti in October as a Senior Volunteer in Project Management and Administration.
After some previous experiences in South and Central America, I decided to dive into the Caribbean region. Haiti appealed me for its unique history, culture and people; a peculiar small country situated in the middle of one of the most charming but touristy and exploited areas in the world. An island with a huge potential in terms of natural resources and goods, but constantly threaten by environmental issues due to natural disasters, drought, land erosion and climate change, all factors that lead to instability, food insecurity and poverty. Two faces of Haiti that make it a controversial place.
GVC works here since the earthquake hit dramatically the western part of the island. After many years of humanitarian intervention, GVC is currently engaged in the implementation and promotion of the dialogue between Civil Society and Local Authorities in the departments of Plateau Central and Artibonite: we support small local producers and farmers’ organisations and their participation in the decision making process in the Municipalities. Our aim is to contribute to a long-term and sustainable local development, in close coordination with authorities, promoters, beneficiaries and local organisations.
My tasks are assisting in the correct execution of project’s activities; I am also in charge of writing new projects and coordinating with partner NGOs. It is a real privilege to be here and work beside these motivated people. I firmly believe in the effectiveness of the EUAV program that gave me the opportunity to work for a reliable NGO, enhance my skills and learn from a new context.
Mèsi anpil Ayiti, ann kontinye ansanm, nou pi fò ansanm! (Thank you very much Haiti, keep going together, we are stronger together!)
